Angels do not pursue Erstad.
Angels did not offer arbitration for Darin Erstad or J.C. Romereo. Erstad played with the Angels for 11 years. The Angels could still sign him
if no other teams offer him a contract. He would be offered a minor league contract with the Angels.
I wouldn't be suprised if the Cardinals offered him a contract. Then he could enjoy the company of his Angel teammates: Jimmy Edmonds, David Ekstein,
Adam Kennedy, Scot Spezio and Jeff Weaver.

The Angels are losing the big guns.
Houston signed outfield Carlos Lee to a six-year, $100 million deal. The big guys have not gone to the Angels so far. And the Cubs are coming on strong:
Alfonso Soriano was signed to an eight-year, $136 million deal, and earlier they re-signed Aramis Ramirez to a five-year, $75 million deal.
Who's left for the Angels?

Angels sign Gary Matthews for $50 million.
Angels missed out on Alfonso Soriano and Aramis Ramirez, so they went for Gary Matthews. They paid a .250 lifetime hittter $10 million a year for the next
5 years. Gary is a great defensive center fielder; he will be a huge upgrade to Figgins. He had an awesome year last year, his only stellar year.
So the Angels are betting that Gary has come to his own now and will continue to produce like last year. He is a good player. I am glad we have him, but
that is a whole lot of money. It is amazing that ball players can get that much money after only one good year.

Nice web site, Gary. I agree with you wholeheartedly. I grew in the OC -
I now live in Paldale. After all the changes the Angels have gone through
since I started following them I was excited to see the new COOL A logo and
the WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP! Then Arte Moreno decides to mess things up
again with this ridiculous city name change. Ugh. Anyway, GO ANGELS!
Keep up the good work!

| Book Review - The Last Nine Innings |
Great Book by Charles Euchner,
sent to me by Tony Viardo, Sourcebooks Inc.
This book is one the most interesting baseball books I have ever read.
I have never read anything like it before.
The author takes you through game 7 of the 2001 World Series. He adds another dimension by providing in-depth
interviews with players and baseball people during his discussion of the game.
What is really amazing is his presentation of the technical aspects of baseball.
Excellent book!
